Year-round hydroponic farm growing lettuce, leafy greens, and herbs in Lockport.
Second City Greens is a hydroponic urban farm operating out of two 40-foot shipping containers in Lockport, Illinois. Founded in 2021, the farm grows seven varieties of herbs, lettuces, and select leafy greens such as Swiss chard and kale 365 days a year in a controlled environment. Its two container units together yield output comparable to 8 to 10 acres of conventional farmland. Produce is harvested on the day of delivery to maximize freshness. Second City Greens sells through CSA subscriptions, local grocery stores, food cooperatives, and restaurants. CSA options include a Family Share, a Leafy Green Share, a Lettuce-Only Share, and an Herb Share, with pickup locations in the Lockport area.
Second City Greens grows without soil, using nutrient-rich water and coconut coir (the natural fiber from coconut husks) as a supporting surface. The farm uses no herbicides, pesticides, or GMOs. A water purification system keeps irrigation clean, and the operation uses up to 90% less water than a conventional farm. Energy-efficient LED lighting powers the controlled growing environment. The farm sources seeds and growing inputs from suppliers including Johnny's Seeds, General Hydroponics, and JR Peters.
