Overview

Off-grid permaculture farm producing heirloom cornmeal, dry beans, vegetables, and staple grains near Berea, KY

Salamander Springs Farm is an off-grid permaculture farm built from scratch since 2001 on Appalachian mountain land near Berea, Kentucky. Owner Susana Lein established the farm after nearly a decade developing permaculture systems with small farmers in Latin America. The farm produces a variety of vegetables, staple grains, dry beans, fruits, nuts, berries, herbs, flowers, forest medicinals, ramps, and mushrooms. Its signature product is whole-grain stone-ground cornmeal milled from KY Rainbow, a colorful heirloom dent corn Lein has developed since 2001. It also sells tender-kernel yellow popcorn, black turtle beans, pinto beans, and KY Rainbow corn seed. Customers buy through the Berea Farmers Market, a CSA, local stores and restaurants, and mail order. The farm also offers farm tours, permaculture workshops, and consulting.
