Purple Sage Farms is a fourth- and fifth-generation family farm in Middleton, Idaho, operated by Tim and Mike Sommer. The farm grows over 250 varieties of crops, from familiar culinary herbs to obscure and exotic medicinal varieties, along with seasonal greens, salad mixes, and vegetables. It also raises livestock and sells lamb. An on-farm commercial kitchen produces fermented and dried goods, extending the farm's harvest across all four seasons. Purple Sage Farms sells herbs, produce, lamb, and other farm goods at the Boise Farmers Market and supplies local restaurants and grocers. Purple Sage Farms has been certified organic since 1989, meeting federal standards that include freedom from synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms, as well as promotion of biodiversity and pollinator habitat. The farm has also held Real Organic Project certification since 2019, growing crops in soil (not hydroponically) and raising livestock on pasture. Farming practices center on building soil health through diverse crop rotation, minimal tillage, composted animal manure as fertilizer, and restorative cover crops between plantings. The farm maintains pollinator and beneficial insect habitat as part of its broader ecosystem approach. Fresh herbs are also harvested at peak quality and dried in-house to preserve flavor through winter months.
