100% grass-fed, grass-finished Hereford beef from a 242-acre northwest Illinois farm.
Plum River Farm raises 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef on 242 acres in the driftless region of northwest Illinois. The herd consists of Hereford cattle fed exclusively on grass and hay grown on the farm itself. Beef is available as whole animals, halves, quarters, and individual cuts, with smaller sampler boxes also offered. All pricing includes processing and packing fees, and the beef is dry-aged for three weeks before delivery. Animals are processed at A.J.'s Lena Maid Meats, a small, award-winning, family-run, USDA-inspected facility located 15 miles from the farm. The farm accepts no federal subsidies of any kind.
Plum River Farm grows all of its own grass and hay without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Cattle have free access to pasture throughout the year, with spring-fed streams and rivers running through the farm's pastures providing fresh water. Calves remain with their mothers for at least eight months and are weaned gradually. The farm does not administer hormone treatments or routine antibiotics to its animals. To manage weeds in pastures, the farm uses grazing management and manual labor rather than chemicals, and applies cattle-produced fertilizer back to the fields. Plum River Farm adheres to the standards of the American Grassfed Association.
