Open Field Farm is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm raising grass-fed Corriente beef, pastured eggs, mixed vegetables, flowers, herbs, and dry corn. All produce is distributed through its CSA membership program, which features free-choice, on-farm pickup and some pick-your-own crops. Members choose their own produce each week from freshly harvested selections displayed in the farm's barn. CSA shares include eggs, vegetables, strawberries, melons, and grass-fed beef, along with pick-your-own flowers and herbs. The farm operates on a pay-what-you-can, take-what-you-need model. Members also receive a weekly newsletter with a pick list, farm news, and recipes, and are welcome to relax on-site during pickup.
Open Field Farm applies biodynamic principles, viewing the farm as a self-contained organism and using the biodynamic calendar to guide tasks. The farm strives for a closed-loop system that minimizes outside inputs and integrates soil, plants, animals, and water. When plants need support, it uses only organically approved products and makes its own ferments as supplemental nutrition for plants and animals. Cattle and sheep rotate to fresh pasture to support animal health, encourage native perennial grasses, reduce erosion, and improve soil water retention. Chickens rotate through pastures and vegetable fields to add fertility. Crops are watered exclusively by drip irrigation, and water levels are monitored precisely to respond to drought. In vegetable fields, the farm practices minimum tillage with a spader in spring and plants winter cover crops to support soil health. Hedgerows and trees have been planted to increase on-farm biodiversity and habitat for pollinators and wildlife.
