Oliver's Market Cotati is the original location of the Oliver's Markets chain, opened in 1988 by founder Steve Maass and still operating today at 546 East Cotati Ave. It is a local, independent, employee-owned grocery store carrying a wide selection of both natural and conventional products. Departments include produce, grocery, deli, gourmet cheese, meat and seafood, beer and wine, bakery and cafe, wellness, floral, and cards and gifts. The Cotati store also houses the largest gifts department in the company. Oliver's Markets became an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company and a California Social Purpose Corporation in 2017. Oliver's Market maintains that local means Sonoma County, and it has built long-standing relationships with local growers, makers, and manufacturers in the region. It was the first grocer in Sonoma County to be certified as a Sonoma County Green Business, a distinction it achieved in 2011. The business operates a commercial food scrap collection program and has adopted reusable pallet wraps to reduce single-use plastic. It sources approximately 40% of its energy from local renewables through Sonoma Clean Power, including solar, geothermal, and hydropower. Oliver's employs a full-time Sustainability Coordinator focused on waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation, and pollution prevention.
