Nonprofit farm offering CSA shares, a farm stand, eggs, seedlings, and produce grown on Newton's last working farm.
Newton Community Farm is a nonprofit farm founded in 2006 through a partnership with the City of Newton to preserve the historic Angino farm. It produces over 50,000 pounds of food each year on about one acre of land. Produce reaches neighbors through a farm stand, the Saturday Newton Farmers Market, and several CSA programs, including a summer vegetable share, a late fall share, and a fruit share sourced in partnership with Autumn Hills Orchard. The farm also sells eggs and runs a spring seedling sale offering close to 30,000 seedlings across more than 90 varieties. Ten percent of all produce is donated to local food pantries. Educational programs include workshops, high school internships, volunteer fieldwork, and seasonal family events. Learn more on their About Page.
Newton Community Farm follows the organic principle of feeding the soil, not the plant. Each fall it plants a rye and vetch cover crop to prevent erosion, retain nutrients, and keep soil biology active over winter, covering 70 to 80% of the field. The farm minimizes tillage, using a spader rather than a rototiller because it lifts and drops soil without pulverizing its structure, and uses no-till on some beds. Its only fertilizer is certified organic, sourced from a New York chicken farm, and applied only in early spring when soil is too cold for microbial nitrogen release. Weeds are controlled with biodegradable corn-gluten mulch (GMO-free) and occultation with recycled billboard tarps. Pest control relies on barriers such as row cover and ProtectNet; when spraying is necessary, only organic-approved pesticides are used. The farm irrigates from a shallow well rather than an aquifer, keeping groundwater in equilibrium with the Charles River.
