Mettenburg Farm

Mettenburg Farm uses holistic managed grazing, moving livestock continuously through the seasons for year-round fresh forage and to prevent overgrazing. No preventative antibiotics or added hormones are used, and any animal treated for illness is removed from the consumer beef supply. Prairie and cool-season grasses are not chemically treated, though invasive brush may receive targeted spot treatments by hand when grazing alone cannot control it. Cattle genetics, developed over nearly four decades of breeding to suit native grasses, include original Fleckvieh Simmental and Angus lines. Beef is processed locally by family-owned businesses. Chicken is processed at Anco Processing, a small poultry processor in Garnett, Kansas. Lamb may be supplemented with whole oats, barley, or non-GMO corn depending on available forage. The farm is also developing a multi-species system in which sheep graze with cattle for natural predator protection.
