Fourth-generation family farm selling raw Ayrshire milk, pasture-raised eggs, and goat hikes from a farm stand.
Maplebrook Farmstead is a fourth-generation family farm at 155 Tuttle Road in Sterling, Massachusetts. The property has been in the family since 1935, when the founder's great-grandparents purchased it and later ran a dairy milking Ayrshire cattle across 175 acres of fields, forests, and pastures. When the dairy closed in 1998, the land fell dormant until the fourth generation returned in 2017 with a degree in agriculture and revived the farm with cows, goats, and chickens. Today the farm sells raw Ayrshire milk, pasture-raised eggs, composted manure, mulch hay, and laying hens, all from its on-farm stand. Maplebrook also offers guided goat hikes through its woods and meadows, bookable for groups of up to six adults. Learn more on their About Page.
Maplebrook Farmstead's Ayrshire cows graze on pasture around the clock, coming in only briefly for morning and evening milking. The herd is fed hay produced on the farm and receives a small amount of grain at milking time. The farm states its milk is free of artificial growth hormones, additives, and antibiotics. The roughly 500 laying hens spend spring through fall on pasture in mobile coops, giving them access to fresh air, sunshine, and grass. The coops are moved to fresh areas of the fields each week to support soil health and provide continuous foraging for the flock.
