Multi-generational Groton farm raising registered Boer goats, Katahdin sheep, ducks, and mixed-breed laying hens.
Maple Shade Farm is a multi-generational family farm that has been in the MacGregor family since 1915. Peter and Jessica MacGregor raise ABGA-registered Boer Goats, registered Katahdin Sheep, Welsh Harlequin Ducks, Magpie Ducks, and a flock of mixed-breed laying hens. The farm offers goats and sheep for sale, fertilized hatching eggs, and chicks each spring. Laying hens at Maple Shade Farm are affectionately called "Shady Chickens," a mixed flock that produces brown, green, and blue eggs in medium to large sizes. Peter holds a degree from UMass Stockbridge in General Horticulture and manages a local feed store, bringing deep knowledge of livestock nutrition to the operation.
All animals at Maple Shade Farm are raised with hands-on care provided exclusively by MacGregor family members, allowing the family to know each animal personally. For Boer Goats and Katahdin Sheep, the farm researches and registers pedigrees through the ABGA and selectively pairs animals. Welsh Harlequin and Magpie Ducks are also selectively paired. The laying hens are a mixed flock developed over more than a decade, originating from breeds including Ameraucanas, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds, White Leghorns, Barred Rocks, Speckled Sussex, and Wyandottes, among others.
