Waimānalo farm growing Hawaiian ʻolena (turmeric), vegetables, and tropical crops through organic, regenerative methods.
Yogarden Hawaii is a diversified family farm in Waimānalo, Oʻahu, founded in 2010 by Paul Izak and Kelly Stern. Its signature crop is ʻolena, the Hawaiian word for turmeric, one of the canoe plants early Polynesian voyagers brought to the islands. The farm grows multiple ʻolena varieties, including Indira Yellow, Hawaiian Red, Mango Ginger, BKK, Kali Haldi, and Green ʻOlena, alongside vegetables, vanilla, and tropical tree orchards. Fresh ʻolena is seasonal, available for farm pickup by appointment, with shipping options for select varieties. Chefs and local kitchens can inquire about bulk roots and seasonal produce. The farm also hosts guided tours, field trips, volunteer days, and internships, all by reservation. Learn more on their About Page.
Yogarden Hawaii farms using organic and regenerative practices. Its growing system integrates composting, permaculture, alley cropping, hügelkultur, and vermiculture as connected methods aimed at building living soil. Co-founder Kelly Stern is an avid organic farmer and whole-foods, plant-based chef, and co-founder Paul Izak has worked in organic farming for more than a decade. The farm maintains a living ʻolena collection, growing diversity across varieties to preserve less-common turmeric species and deepen soil knowledge.
