Lafranchi Ranch is a family-owned dairy farm in Nicasio, California, with roots going back to 1919 when Fredolino Lafranchi emigrated from Maggia, Switzerland and established the operation. The ranch spans 1,150 certified organic acres and has been home to the Lafranchi family across multiple generations. In 2010, the family founded Nicasio Valley Cheese Company to produce cheeses inspired by the Valle Maggia region of Switzerland, working with Swiss Master Cheesemaker Maurizio Lorenzetti. The on-site creamery was built inside a remodeled dairy barn, with recycled shipping containers repurposed as ripening rooms. The cheese line includes varieties such as Foggy Morning, Nicasio Square, Halleck Creek, San Geronimo, Locarno, Loma Alta, Formagella, Tomino, and Nicasio Reserve, a gold medal winner at the California State Fair. Lafranchi Ranch holds 1,150 certified organic acres and produces 100% organic milk, completing its conversion from conventional to organic milk production by 2012. The ranch is pasture-based: milk cows derive a significant portion of their diet from pasture grasses, with rotational grazing used to manage the land. The herd numbers over 400 cows. The ranch also keeps more than 3,000 pasture-fed, free-range egg-laying chickens. An on-site composting facility combines chicken waste, cattle waste, local equestrian waste, and green waste to produce fertilizer for the pastures and bedding for the cows. Milk used in cheesemaking comes exclusively from the Lafranchi ranch, drawn from the morning milking and piped directly into the on-site creamery.
