L&A Family Farms is a diversified operation nestled along Sugar Creek in Edgar County, Illinois. Founded in 2004 by two families, the Laus and the Augustuses, the farm raises beef cattle, broiler chickens, laying hens, turkeys, and hogs alongside row crops and vegetables. Its farm store carries pasture-raised chicken cuts, pasture-raised brown eggs, and old-fashioned pure cane sugar sodas. A seasonal vegetable CSA offers full and half share options across a 15-week growing season. Products are also available at the Paris and Terre Haute farmers markets and at Baesler's Market in Terre Haute. L&A Family Farms grows over 50 varieties of vegetables using sustainable agriculture methods, including crop rotation and cover crops to reduce weed growth, control pests, and improve soil fertility. Seeds are started indoors, moved to a greenhouse to harden off, and then planted in the ground either by hand or with a walk-behind planter. All vegetables are harvested by hand, with most picked on the day of delivery; produce not delivered same-day is stored in a walk-in cooler. Chickens and laying hens are pasture-raised. The farm also raises its own beef herd, hogs, and turkeys. Sunflowers are staggered-planted every ten days across multiple fields to extend the blooming season, with the maze planted in black oil sunflowers whose seeds are repurposed as birdseed at season's end.
