Sustainably grown fruit and vegetables, with a farm stand, pick-your-own, and Boston-area farmers markets.
Kimball Fruit Farm is a family-owned produce farm whose land has been in agricultural use since the 1700s. The farm operated as a wholesale apple business from the late 1960s before expanding into vegetables and fruit in the early 1990s, when a farm stand and farmers market presence were added. Current owners David and Amanda Wadleigh took over in 2022; David had worked and been mentored on the farm for eighteen years prior. The farm sells sustainably grown produce through its on-site farm stand, seasonal harvest boxes, and eight Greater Boston farmers markets. Its produce is also featured by a number of local restaurants and chefs. Kimball Fruit Farm accepts SNAP at both its farm stand and farmers markets. Learn more on their About Page.
Kimball Fruit Farm grows produce using Integrated Pest Management (IPM), a program built around four branches: biological, cultural, physical, and chemical controls. Biological controls include parasitic nematodes in its greenhouses to manage fungus gnats and potting mix containing beneficial mycorrhizae. Cultural practices include drip irrigation, no-till growing, cover crops, and proper fertilization to promote healthy plant growth and prevent soil erosion. Physical controls include 100% biodegradable mulch for weed prevention and a 3,000-plus-foot deer fence around its fields. Chemical controls combine conventional and certified organic pesticides, prioritizing products that target specific pests over beneficial insects and favoring preventative over corrective applications. The IPM approach supports naturally occurring beneficial insects and pollinators, including ladybugs, without needing to introduce bees artificially.
