Urban farm stand and teaching kitchen growing fresh produce in Fort Wayne's Renaissance Pointe neighborhood.
Johnnie Mae Farm is an urban farm owned by the City of Fort Wayne and managed in partnership with Purdue Extension - Allen County. The farm operates on three-quarters of an acre behind a renovated historic firehouse, which was converted in 2015 into a commercial-grade teaching kitchen and event space. It is named after Johnnie Mae White, a long-time neighborhood advocate known for her service to others. The farm grows fresh produce available for purchase at a weekly farm market, open to all with no eligibility requirements or restrictions. It accepts EBT/SNAP, WIC, and Senior farmers market vouchers. Beyond produce sales, Johnnie Mae Farm hosts cooking and nutrition classes for adults, gardening education for youth, and farm tours.
Johnnie Mae Farm grows its produce using organic growing practices and a responsible land ethic. Its gardens employ permaculture, low-spray methods, and integrated pest management (IPM). The farm also adapts its growing beds to address the challenges of urban soil, including practices to prevent heavy metal exposure. All produce is grown on-site.
