Family-run farm specializing in 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef and pastured eggs in northern Illinois.
Irish Grove Farms, Inc. has been in the Flynn family for over 100 years, situated in the rolling hills of northern Illinois. Jackie (Flynn) Batista and her husband Marcelo have managed the operation since 2006. The farm raises Murray Grey beef cattle and laying hens across 205 acres. Beef is sold by the whole, half, or quarter, or in variety packs and individual cuts, all available for pickup. Eggs from the farm's laying flock are sold out of an on-farm refrigerator. Both Jackie and Marcelo work full-time jobs off the farm alongside running the operation. Orders are by appointment only, as the farm has no retail storefront.
Irish Grove Farms raises primarily Murray Grey cattle, a breed selected for grass-fed beef production. The herd is rotated through organically-managed pastures in summer and fed organically-grown hay in winter. Cattle receive no grain, hormones, or preventative antibiotics, and are given a free-choice organic salt and mineral supplement custom-made for the farm. The farm practices rotational grazing, dividing fields into paddocks and resting each for 30 days before returning cattle, which promotes forage quality and reduces weed pressure. Of the farm's 205 acres, the hay and rotational grazing ground is organically managed, while any grain crops grown to break the alfalfa cycle are conventionally managed. Laying hens have access to a 2-acre field and are supplemented with a mix of organic homegrown ground corn, a protein supplement, and an organic salt and mineral combination.
