Family-run CSA farm growing organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs on nine acres
Harrison Market Gardens is a family-run farm that began as a small U-pick operation and has grown into a CSA serving over 100 families. The farm grows a wide range of vegetables, fruits, and herbs across nine acres, including tomatoes, beets, asparagus, strawberries, watermelon, shiitake mushrooms, and a large variety of herbs. CSA shares can be picked up at the farm or delivered to drop sites in Machesney Park, Rockford, and the Chicago area; a farm-to-door delivery option is also available. Farm-share members who pick up on-site can select their own herbs from the garden and access extras including honey and eggs. The farm also supplies several local restaurants. Harrison Market Gardens describes its growing methods as "organic or better" and states that the farms have never used chemicals. The operation has since become USDA certified organic, with certification provided by NICS, a Wisconsin-based certifying agency. The farm maintains soil fertility as an ongoing focus, drawing on compost supplied by a neighboring dairy farm (spent calf bedding) and grass clippings and leaves from a landscaping company. Cover crops are used regularly to avoid bare land, and the farm has added windbreaks and fence rows for protection. Ben and Julie operate a second farm with sandy soil suited to root crops, potatoes, strawberries, and sweet potatoes. CSA boxes include produce picked within 12 to 48 hours of delivery.
