Stone-milled heirloom and ancient grain flours, cornmeal, rolled oats, and whole grains grown on a Midwestern family farm.
Hazzard Free Farm grows and stone-mills heirloom and ancient grains on a family farm in Pecatonica, Illinois that has been in operation since 1847. Andrea (Andy) Hazzard founded the current farming operation in 2007, rooted in a philosophy of sustainability and transparency. The farm produces flours, cornmeal, polenta, whole wheat, emmer, barley, berries, groats, and rolled oats. Seed saving is a core part of the operation, with an ongoing commitment to adapting ancient and heirloom varieties to the farm's soils. Education is a stated tenet, and the farm welcomes visitors to see its practices firsthand. Learn more on their About Page.
Hazzard Free Farm grows its grains without chemical pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides, and uses only ancient, open-pollinated, or heirloom seed varieties. Treated and GMO seeds are never used; organic foundation seed is planted whenever available. All whole grains are stone-milled to preserve flavor and avoid the high-heat conditions of industrial milling. Flours contain the full germ and bran and are unbromated, unbleached, and free of additives. Rolled oats are not steamed, a step the farm avoids to retain the grains' natural oils. The processing facility operates under a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan and is regularly inspected by the Illinois Department of Health.
