Grass-fed dairy farm producing Gouda cheese, milk, yogurt, and quark from its own herd
Grass Root Dairies is a family-owned dairy farm in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, formerly known as Gort's Gouda Cheese Farm. The operation traces its roots to 1983, when the Gort family established the original farm after immigrating from Holland. In 2007, the Wikkerink family took over and has continued the tradition of on-farm cheesemaking. The farm produces Gouda (in plain and spiced varieties), Maasdammer (a Swiss-style cheese), Mazuda (a semi-hard cheese blending Gouda texture with Swiss-style character), fluid milk in glass bottles, Bulgarian yogurt, and Quark. Products are manufactured at the farm's own Salmon Arm cheese plant and distributed across the Shuswap, Okanagan, and Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The farm also sells at several regional farmers markets and offers farm tours. Learn more on their About Page.
Grass Root Dairies describes its cows as grass-fed only: the herd grazes on the farm's own pastures from May to October, and is fed organic hay during winter months. All products are stated to contain only natural ingredients with no added preservatives, and the farm states its products are GMO free. Cheese is made from milk produced exclusively by the farm's own cows.
