Feathered Horses Farm is a small family-owned farm nestled at the foot of Lone Jack Mountain in the Palouse region of Northern Idaho. Founded in 2015 on bare ground, the farm was built by the family with a focus on sustainable and humane animal husbandry. It raises two rare heritage sheep breeds from Wales: Black Welsh Mountain sheep, known for their deep black wool and flavorful meat, and Clun Forest sheep, valued for wool, milk, and meat. The farm also produces small-batch handmade soaps under its FHF Soapworks label, using high-quality oils, butters, and cosmetic-grade colors and fragrances. Feathered Horses Farm operates entirely off-grid, powered by solar panels, with well water for the household and livestock, and ponds providing water for animals and wildlife. The farm uses a rotational grazing system to maximize pasture productivity, reduce the risk of internal parasites, and make use of on-farm fertilizer. Sheep are grass-fed and provided with daily access to fresh grass or hay, along with shelter from the elements. The farm focuses on conservation breeding of rare livestock and guardian dog breeds, including a Black Welsh Mountain sheep flock carrying bloodlines described as unique to the Western United States. Livestock guardian dogs are raised alongside pet dogs and a working border collie, with co-existence as a stated priority.
