Deardorff Family Farms is a fourth-generation family farming operation founded in 1937 and now based in Oxnard, California. The business began when W.H. Deardorff started a produce sales and marketing company in Los Angeles; the name changed to Deardorff Family Farms in 2006 as the fourth generation took the helm. Today, Tom Deardorff II and Scott Deardorff operate the company out of a 110,000-square-foot LEED Certified facility. The farm grows both certified organic and conventional row crop vegetables, including celery, celery hearts, romaine, green and red leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cilantro, green onions, and cabbage. Products are sold under two labels: Deardorff Organics and Sir William. The farm serves retail, foodservice, and wholesale customers throughout the United States, Canada, and internationally. Deardorff Family Farms is certified organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI), following USDA organic standards. The farm has grown organic produce since 2005 in Ventura and Monterey Counties in California and Baja California. Soil practices include multi-year fertility plans, cover crops (including barley and beans), crop rotation, and natural amendments. Weeds are managed with flame-weeding equipment and recycled plastic tarps, which are recycled after each use. Pest control relies on beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings, and wasps, plus host plants, trap crops, and crop rotation. Water conservation includes drip irrigation, high-quality pipelines, and real-time soil moisture monitoring. The farm uses Returnable Plastic Containers (RPC) to reduce cardboard packaging and EPI-technology plastics designed to degrade. Food safety follows Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards and is audited by PrimusLabs.
