Certified organic vegetable, fruit, herb, and medicinal plant farm with a CSA, farmers market stand, and farm apothecary.
Crystal Organic Farm is one of the region's oldest and largest certified organic farms. Founded in 1993 on 175 acres of creeks, pastures, and hardwood forests in Newborn, Georgia, the farm is run by Belgium-native Nicolas Donck and his partner Jeni Jarrard-Donck, who has training in herbalism and homeopathy. Crystal specializes in vegetables, fruits, flowers, and medicinal herbs, and introduced Belgian varieties such as escarole, frisée, and leeks to the Atlanta market. Produce and herbs are sold through a seasonal CSA farm box, at Morningside Farmers Market in Atlanta (where Nicolas has been an anchor vendor since 1995), and via home delivery. The Farm Apothecary sells fresh and dried medicinal herbs grown on the farm, plus products from select herbal makers. The farm also hosts tours, classes, volunteer days, and consultations. The farm holds USDA organic and Real Organic Project certifications for its herbs, dating organic certification to its 1993 founding. About 85% of produce grows in 28 high tunnels, which extend seasons and reduce pest and weed pressure. Instead of approved pesticides or insecticides, it uses nettle and comfrey tea for disease prevention, beneficial nematodes for pest control, and companion planting. Crop rotation and soil solarization manage weeds and disease, while slow shallow tilling preserves topsoil and beneficial insects. Compost tea with micro-organisms, vitamins, and minerals supports soil fertility. The farm strives for zero food waste, feeding excess produce to chickens or composting it. Crystal belongs to Georgia Organics and the Real Organic Project, participates in the Natural Resources Conservation Service, contributes to Southeast university crop studies, and is accepted into the United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary Network.
