Year-round urban farm growing microgreens, herbs, edible flowers, and salad greens in Chicago.
Closed Loop Farms is a year-round urban farm based at The Plant in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood. Founded in 2015 with nine trays of microgreens, it has grown into a biodiverse operation with both indoor growing space and a seasonal outdoor farm built on what was formerly a gravel parking lot. The farm grows microgreens, herbs, edible flowers, and salad greens, and supplies approximately 200 restaurants as well as hundreds of home customers across the Chicagoland area. Products are available for wholesale and home delivery. A team of around 15 employees, the majority of whom live within five miles of the farm, harvest and pack all products by hand.
Closed Loop Farms grows its microgreens indoors in certified organic, locally sourced potting soil under LED lights, and uses no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers on any crops. Organic matter left after microgreen harvests (stems, roots, and soil) is composted and used as fertilizer on the outdoor farm, where roughly fifty varieties of herbs and flowers also support pollinators. A 2,200-square-foot hoop house extends the outdoor growing season into spring and fall. The farm preserves summer herbs by dehydrating them for herbal tea and works with local food processors to make pickles and ferments from surplus seasonal produce. All microgreens, flowers, and lettuce are harvested and packed by hand and delivered in reusable containers.
