CSA farm offering organically grown vegetables, U-Pick crops, eggs, meat, and baked goods on 35 acres in western Massachusetts.
Caretaker Farm is a 35-acre diversified vegetable farm founded in 1969, operating a summer and winter CSA program that serves hundreds of member families each season. The farm's signature Free-Choice distribution model lets CSA members select exactly the vegetables they want from each week's harvest, rather than receiving a pre-packed box. In addition to over 40 crops spanning more than 175 varieties, members can pick their own herbs, flowers, berries, and select vegetables directly from the fields. Eggs, meat, and freshly baked breads and pastries are also available for purchase during distribution. Caretaker Farm uses regenerative farming methods, building soil fertility with compost produced from the farm's own animals and vegetable matter rather than chemical fertilizers. A portion of cropland is rested from vegetable production each year, and cover crops and mulches are used to manage weeds and pests, retain soil moisture, and reduce erosion. Pest control relies on floating row covers, crop rotation, and hand removal. The farm does not use chemical herbicides, pesticides, or insecticides, including those allowable under USDA organic standards. The farm's approximately 100 chickens and pigs contribute compost and help rejuvenate pastures; animals are raised without growth hormones or unnecessary antibiotics. The farm's electricity, including portable chicken fences, is supplied by a 9.9 kW photovoltaic solar system.
