Grass-fed, grass-finished Bonsmara beef from a holistic California cattle ranch.
C&R Ranch raises grass-fed, grass-finished beef cattle on rolling foothills pastures in California's Sacramento Valley. Ranchers Charlotte and Roy Ekland acquired the home ranch in 2009 and have worked to restore its soil, native grasses, and wildlife habitat. The ranch is one of the first to introduce the Bonsmara breed to California, importing the first heifers from Texas in 2015. The Bonsmara is a South African breed selected for its ability to thrive in hot, dry climates like Northern California's without stressing local natural resources. Beef is available for purchase as shares. Learn more on their About Page.
C&R Ranch cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished, spending their lives on open pastures eating grass and hay produced on the ranch. They receive no antibiotics, no hormones or growth stimulants, and no grain or high-carbohydrate concentrates. Mineral supplements and protein supplements may be provided when environmental stressors reduce grass quality. The ranch practices Holistic Managed Grazing: livestock rotate from paddock to paddock during the grazing season, herd density and grazing periods are adjusted to plant growth cycles, and adequate rest between grazings allows plants to rebuild root systems. Vegetative cover is maintained to protect soil, and no-till seed drills are used to minimize soil disturbance. Low-stress handling methods are used when moving or examining cattle. Charlotte and Roy have also planted oak trees and riparian species by the hundreds to revitalize habitat and replenish stands of native and perennial grasses.
