Four-generation Northern California ranch raising certified organic, pasture-raised chicken
Big Bluff Ranch is a four-generation family farm in Northern California, founded in 1960, that raises pasture-raised chicken on land it has tended for over six decades. The ranch was built on challenging terrain with shallow soils and steep hills, a place locals once called "chicken scratch country." Current operator Tyler Dawley grew up on the property and returned to develop its signature program: raising chickens on open pasture as part of a land-healing approach. Birds are air-chilled and flash-frozen. The ranch also offers stays at an on-property lake. Learn more on their About Page.
Big Bluff Ranch holds both Certified Organic and Certified Regenerative third-party certifications for its chicken. Birds are pasture-raised and fed a diet free of corn and soy. After processing, chickens are air-chilled and flash-frozen. The ranch's regenerative approach centers on cycling chickens across pasture to restore soil health: over two miles of on-property creek have been restored to year-round flow, and the ranch reports a significant increase in perennial plant life since the program began. The philosophy, shaped by Allan Savory's principles and decades of on-the-ground adaptation, puts soil restoration ahead of production targets.
