Diversified small-scale farm raising Cormo sheep, pastured chickens, eggs, produce, and beeswax candles in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Butte Mountain Farm is a diversified, small-scale farm located a few miles east of Jackson, CA in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It raises Cormo sheep, chickens, and bees, and grows a variety of fruits and vegetables. The farm sells free-range eggs, stewing hens, broiler chickens, and live chickens for those starting their own flocks. Seasonal lamb is sold by the whole animal, available in the fall by special order. Additional products include 100% pure beeswax candles, Cormo fleece, yarn, roving, and tanned sheepskin hides, as well as items made in the farm's cottage food kitchen. Products are available at farmers markets and by farm visit at pre-arranged times.
Butte Mountain Farm holds Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) status and follows natural, organic practices. Chickens are fed a soy- and corn-free organic feed along with sprouted organic wheat and greens from the farm. Sheep are raised on grass and alfalfa with no grain. Cormo fleece is processed into roving and yarn within the local fibershed area. The farm notes that its sheep are not covered under the CNG certification due to the difficulty in sourcing certified organic alfalfa.
