Overview
Family-run apple orchard and vegetable farm offering CSA shares, farm-fresh produce, and over 50 apple varieties.
Buffalo Ridge Orchard is a small family farm founded by Vern and Mary Zahradnik, who planted their first apple tree in 2003 and gradually transitioned an 80-acre traditional agricultural farm into a local produce operation. The orchard has grown from 800 to 8,000 trees and now carries over 50 varieties of apples, alongside 8 types of pears, more than a dozen vegetable types, and 40 types of herb plants. Buffalo Ridge Orchard sells through weekly CSA shares, including a Collaboration Share that incorporates products from other local growers and makers, and an Apple Share available in standard and large sizes. Produce is also available through an online store and at local markets and retail outlets.
Buffalo Ridge Orchard aims to grow quality local produce responsibly, continually updating its practices to conserve soil and resources. Vegetables are grown organically with crop rotation, cover crops, cultivation, hand weeding, and organic sprays as needed. The apple and pear orchard follows an integrated pest management system. A weather station linked to disease-modeling software and pest-pressure monitoring lures ensures sprays are applied only when disease or pest levels reach a set threshold. Conventional sprays are used in spring to manage fungal pressure and certain pests, then the farm switches to organic sprays after fruit sets, typically in early June. To address summer pest pressure, the orchard encourages beneficial insects through native prairie plantings along its perimeter. After harvest, apples are washed in an organic peroxide and vinegar solution. The farm does not use a post-harvest fungicide dip or wax its apples.
