Organic permaculture farm growing tropical fruits, macadamia nuts, honey, and medicinal plants, with a cafe and guided farm tours.
Big Island Farms is an organic permaculture farm and educational center founded by Gordon Goff, who arrived on the Big Island in 1989. Spanning 64 acres along the Hamakua Coast, the farm grows over 200 species of edible and medicinal plants, including macadamia nuts, coconuts, cacao, taro, banana, papaya, turmeric, and ginger. It also maintains a working apiary that produces raw, unheated honey. Visitors can book a privately guided farm tour that includes a tasting platter of freshly harvested produce. An on-site cafe serves espresso drinks, island-grown teas, and hand-baked vegan goods, with every product sourced from the farm or a local partner. The farm also offers a workshop series and educational programs rooted in permaculture and regenerative design. Learn more on their About Page.
Big Island Farms describes itself as an organic permaculture farm. The upper portion of the property is planted in organically grown macadamia nuts and kukui nuts. The lower section hosts permaculture food forests, themed gardens, and coconut orchards irrigated by water from the Kohala forest preserve via the historic Hamakua canal. The farm produces raw honey that is filtered once to separate wax, with no heating, micro-filtering, preservatives, or additives. Cafe teas are brewed using island-grown tea sourced from the local community, and all cafe products are sourced from the farm or local partners. The farm's stated long-term goal is to grow and process super-mineralized, organically grown products on site.
