Big Bear Ranch is a family-operated farm set on 1,100 acres of pasture and forest in British Columbia's Cariboo Region. It raises cattle, sheep, pigs, and laying hens, selling beef, lamb, pork, and poultry direct to customers. All animals are born on the ranch and raised on pasture. Cattle and sheep are grass-fed and grass-finished; pigs are raised in large pastures with trees and wallows; and laying hens are free range. Big Bear Ranch holds Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) certification and Certified Grassfed by AWA certification, both in place since March 2016. The ranch uses low-stress animal handling techniques and manages its 1,100 acres so animals live as close as possible to their natural behaviours. Cattle and sheep are grass-fed and grass-finished; no grain feeding for ruminants. To replenish soil nutrients, the ranch uses kelp, diatomaceous earth, and rock salt. Bio-Dynamic preparations have been applied to the land since 2006. The ranch also supports pollinators, including mason bees, as part of its approach to maintaining a balanced farm ecosystem.
