Family farm raising pasture-raised eggs, broiler chickens, and turkeys in the Sierra Foothills.
Back to Basics Farm is a family-run poultry farm in the Sierra Foothills that has been raising birds for over 30 years. The farm produces pasture-raised eggs, broiler chickens, and turkeys, raising everything it sells to maintain control over product quality. Eggs are collected, washed, sorted, and packaged by hand. Products are available through local retailers, co-ops, and farmers markets, and are also served at several area restaurants. The farm is operated by Katie and Justin, with Katie serving on the Nevada County Farm Bureau board and supporting local 4-H and FFA programs through annual scholarships.
Back to Basics Farm raises Lohman and Highline Brown hens described as pasture-raised and free-range, supplementing them with layer feed. In summer, hens range on a poultry-blend grass high in omegas; in winter they receive organic barley fodder. Eggs are labeled non-GMO. Broiler chickens are moved onto grass at around three weeks old to forage and eat bugs, and are supplemented with non-GMO feed. Broilers are processed at a USDA facility. All feeds across the farm contain no added medications or hormones.
