Small family farm specializing in heritage pastured poultry, chicks, and pastured eggs.
Sunbird Farms is a small, family-run farm in Central California focused on preserving rare and heritage poultry breeds. It operates as what it calls a "preservation holding," raising select breeds chosen for quality, historical significance, and suitability to the region's climate. The farm offers chicks, juveniles, pastured poultry, and pastured eggs. Current breeds include Faverolles, Light Sussex, and Pita Pinta. Several of its breed selections appear on Slow Food's Ark of Taste, and the farm is a member of Slow Food USA, the American Poultry Association, and The Livestock Conservancy. Sunbird Farms intentionally stays small to maintain a hands-on operation and focuses on what it calls the "Standard of Production": the right balance of historical breed structure, flavorful meat, and efficient egg laying. Learn more on their About Page.
Sunbird Farms raises its birds on organic pasture in the California sunshine. Heritage meat breeds spend several months outdoors, gaining flavor from greens and grubs before processing. Laying hens follow seasonal daylight patterns, working through the longer days and resting when days grow shorter. The farm feeds its birds organic feed and hand-selects breeding stock in small quantities, hatching and raising all birds on the farm. It sources foundation breeding stock from Greenfire Farms, a relationship in place since 2009, and selects across generations for vigor, production, and genetic diversity. The farm is a member of Slow Food USA and The Livestock Conservancy.
