Conservation homestead raising heritage livestock, poultry, goats, and pigs with a farm garden and orchard in northwest Florida.
Silver Oaks Farm is a small conservation homestead in Marianna, Florida focused on supplying local families with farm-grown food while regenerating the land it stewards. The farm raises registered Boer and Tennessee Fainting Goats for meat and dairy, beef cattle, American Guinea Hogs, and a flock of heritage chickens, ducks, heritage turkeys, and peafowl. It also keeps heritage and meat rabbits and a herd of critically endangered Gulf Coast Native Sheep. A farm garden and orchard round out production with fruits and vegetables. The farm participates in The Livestock Conservancy and offers goat and chicken products through its online shop, along with experiential hospitality for visitors.
Silver Oaks Farm raises its animals on non-GMO, organic feed and follows natural and holistic animal husbandry practices. For its goat and sheep program, it applies the Pat Coleby natural care approach alongside pasture and soil testing. The farm uses Thorvin for Animals, a mineral supplement, for its flock and incorporates Thorvin for Plant Foliar along with rabbit, chicken, and pig manure to amend its garden soil. Heritage poultry are raised free-range. The Gulf Coast Native Sheep herd is part of the Livestock Conservancy's Shave Em to Save Em program, which connects fiber artists with the farm's wool. Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs protect the animals on the property.
