Overview
Family-owned apiary producing raw local honey, infused honey, beeswax candles, and honey-based skincare.
Sarasota Honey Company is a family-owned apiary co-founded by Alma and Glenn Johnson, with a core commitment to employing and empowering people with special needs. Alma serves as head beekeeper and certified queen breeder, overseeing bee colony care, workshops, and community outreach. The company produces raw honey harvested from hives across Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte Counties, alongside organically infused honey, 100% beeswax candles, all-natural soaps, face and body creams, jams, sauces, and honey candies. Products are available through an online shop and at several area farmers markets, including the Venice Farmers Market and Wellen Park Farmers Market. Sarasota Honey Company also offers bee relocation services, beginner hive and nuc setups, and a host-a-hive program. Learn more on their About Page.
Sarasota Honey Company maintains many small bee yards, typically with fewer than 3 to 10 colonies each, keeping honey from each location and season separate rather than blending batches. Hives are placed in urban settings near backyard gardens and local farms that practice organic principles, rather than in rural mono-crop environments. Honey is not pasteurized. When supplemental feeding is necessary, bees receive honey water with added vitamins, enzymes, and amino acids. The company sources ingredients for its broader product line from small farms it identifies as using sustainable and ethical practices, both domestically and internationally. Its skincare line is made without harsh chemicals and is described as paraben-free and non-GMO. Sarasota Honey Company has partnered with Mote Marine Laboratory, providing 100% beeswax and raw honey to support wound care for injured sea turtles.
