Overview

Indoor aquaponics farm and nonprofit growing tilapia, greens, and herbs to expand fresh food access in Lexington.

FoodChain is a nonprofit founded in 2011 that operates a one-of-a-kind indoor aquaponics farm alongside a teaching kitchen, food literacy programs, and a neighborhood grocery store. The farm raises tilapia, marine shrimp, lettuce, microgreens, and herbs in a deep-water recirculating system housed in a former bread factory. In 2026, FoodChain opened the Neighborhood Green Grocery on Lexington's north side, offering Kentucky-grown produce, local products, pantry staples, and grab-and-go meals, with SNAP, WIC, and Kentucky Double Dollars accepted. It also runs the Nourish Lexington program, which combines direct food access with education, and has been a USDA Summer Food Service Program sponsor since 2019, providing free youth meals. Farm tours, cooking classes, volunteer opportunities, and youth agriculture programs round out its offerings. Learn more on their About Page.
