Eco Terreno Wines and Vineyards grows and produces 100% estate wines on its farm along the Russian River in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. The business was founded after owner Mark observed the contrast between chemical-heavy viticulture and the biodiverse, chemical-free vineyards of Bordeaux, and set out to farm differently. Its name is Spanish for 'ecology of the land,' reflecting the farm's focus on the long-term health of the land. Whites, rosés, reds, and library wines are all grown on the estate, with the microclimate of Alexander Valley shaping each vintage. Eco Terreno also operates an urban tasting room in San Francisco's Jackson Square neighborhood, open Thursdays through Sundays, where guests can book guided flights or stop in as walk-ins. Eco Terreno Wines and Vineyards holds three farm certifications: CCOF Certified Organic, Real Organic Project, and Certified Bee-Friendly Farming. The farm practices both organic and regenerative agriculture, growing grapes without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Over 100 acres are seeded with cover crops, including white yarrow, California poppy, sweet peas, and echinacea, to build soil health, prevent erosion, retain moisture, and support pollinators. Chickens, ducks, and geese roam freely through the vineyard for natural pest control, while sheep graze cover crops during winter, mowing and fertilizing the soil naturally. The farm makes its own biodynamic compost on-site from organic cow manure, organic straw, pomace, and plant waste from its edible garden. More than 10% of the property is preserved as natural habitat, and the farm maintains a dedicated bee garden. Water use is managed with attention to the health of the adjacent Russian River.
