Black Welsh Mountain sheep farm offering grass-fed mutton, black wool, fiber products, and breeding stock.
Desert Weyr is a small family farm specializing in Black Welsh Mountain sheep, a heritage British breed valued for both meat and wool. The farm produces grass-fed and finished mutton, as well as black wool, washed and carded rovings, spun yarn, and hiking socks. Breeding stock is also available for farmers seeking a low-intervention, forage-based heritage sheep. Desert Weyr maintains what it describes as the only performance-recorded Black Welsh Mountain flock in the world, recording flock EBVs with the NSIP. The farm also sells sheep manure to local gardeners and saves ram horns for use in crooks, buttons, knife handles, and similar goods. Products are available through its online farm store. Desert Weyr raises its Black Welsh Mountain sheep on pasture, and its animals are finished entirely on forage. Pastures are sustainably managed with the stated goal of improving soil fertility over time. The farm emphasizes using as much of each animal as possible, including wool, meat, manure, and horns. Its flock is double-registered in the US and UK, and the farm maintains Federal Scrapie-free and OPP-free status. Desert Weyr tracks flock genetics through Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) recorded with the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP), and maintains two of the eight known bloodline clusters of Black Welsh Mountain sheep in North America, with a focus on genetic diversity.
