Small-scale vegetable farm growing 60+ varieties of seasonal produce in Northern Kentucky
Dark Wood Farm is a small-scale vegetable and herb farm in Northern Kentucky, owned and operated by Annie Woods since 2014 and now co-stewarded by her partner, Romain Picasso. The farm settled on a permanent 50-acre property in Bracken County in 2021 after seven years of leasing land in multiple locations. More than 60 types of vegetables and herbs are grown on a compact one-acre footprint, with the full range of seasonal crops: spring greens, summer tomatoes and peppers, and fall root vegetables and cold-hardy greens. The farm runs a seasonal CSA program offering weekly shares of six to eight vegetables from late May through November, as well as an annual plant sale and a food-access program. Dark Wood Farm also supplies local restaurants. Learn more on their About Page.
Dark Wood Farm grows all produce according to natural and organic principles, using no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Soil fertility is built through compost, mineral amendments, and cover crops. Everything on the farm is seeded, planted, weeded, and harvested by hand by Annie, Romain, and a small crew of friends and family. Pests and plant diseases are managed with fabric row cover, planting flowers and beneficial crops to attract insect predators, and rotating a diverse set of crops through the fields each year. The farm also minimizes packaging waste, asking CSA members to bring their own bags or coolers at pickup.
