Family ranch selling 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef by the whole or half steer
Bates Grass-Fed Beef is a fifth-generation family cattle ranch at Mountain Home Ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills, operated by Dan and Debbie Bates. The Bates family has cared for the ranch since 1922, when Earl Bates founded Mountain Home Dairy. Today, the operation focuses on 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef, sold by the whole or half steer. The current herd grew from a few orphaned calves bottle-fed by the family more than twenty years ago. Buyers can customize their cuts, with processing handled through partner meat markets. The ranch serves families across the Bakersfield, Porterville, Tulare County, and Los Angeles areas. Learn more on their About Page.
The herd roams free across more than 550 acres of Sierra Nevada foothill pasture year-round, with no confinement in barns. Cows are fed grass and alfalfa hay exclusively and are 100% grass-finished. Some pastures are irrigated to maintain access to green grass throughout the year. Calves stay with their mothers and nurse until natural weaning, growing up in a free-roaming herd. To minimize stress, the ranch arranges for on-site slaughter rather than transport to a slaughterhouse. Before processing, animals are finished with alfalfa hay for two to three weeks to improve tenderness. Bates partners with Exeter Meat Market in Exeter, CA, and Bakersfield Meats in Bakersfield, CA, for cutting, aging, wrapping, and freezing.
