Certified organic vegetables and flowers, grown with no-till, human-powered methods on a 9-acre property in Woodstock, IL.
Banford Road Farm is a certified organic, regenerative farm operated by Jason and Julie on a 9-acre former tree nursery in Woodstock, Illinois. The farm grows a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, including crops such as carrots, cauliflower, bok choy, kohlrabi, celery, and zinnias. Produce is available at the Woodstock Farmers' Market, the Park Ridge Farmers' Market, the Frankfort Country Market, and an indoor Woodstock winter market. Home delivery is also offered through an online store. The farm's guiding principle, expressed in its own slogan, is "hand grown in living soil."
Banford Road Farm holds USDA certified organic certification and describes its management practices as significantly exceeding USDA organic standards. The farm uses no synthetic inputs and relies entirely on hand tools, with no tractor tillage after the initial ground-breaking phase. Soil is kept continuously covered with certified organic compost applied as a mulch layer, which suppresses weeds and feeds soil biology. Crops are cut at the soil surface at harvest rather than uprooted, leaving root systems in place to feed soil microbes and hold soil during heavy rain. Succession planting keeps living roots in the ground throughout the growing season. The farm tracks soil health over time using a Haney soil test to verify increases in subsurface carbon and organic matter. It describes its approach as regenerative, no-till, and human-powered.
