Alaska ranch raising beef, pork, lamb, bison, and dairy cattle with regenerative practices.
Alaska Natural Foods is a family-run livestock ranch in Delta Junction, Alaska, operating under the legal name Blue Creek Livestock LLC. Founded by Tangy and Matt Bates, the operation moved from Idaho to Alaska in 2016 and has been building herds and soils ever since. The ranch raises beef (including Murray Grey genetics bred into Angus and Simmental lines), pigs, sheep, goats, dairy cows, and bison. Products are sold in curated boxes, CSA meat shares, half- and whole-animal shares, and individual cuts, all available through the farm's online shop. Beyond meat sales, Alaska Natural Foods runs a Bucket Calves Program for young people interested in animal husbandry and offers seasonal farm tours to local schools. Learn more on their About Page.
Alaska Natural Foods uses regenerative agricultural practices, focusing on soil health through conservation tillage, cover crops, crop rotation, composting, mobile animal shelters, and pasture cropping. In winter, livestock are fed a fodder system of sprouted barley (brought from Idaho in 2016), ranch-grown hay, and chopped barley grain sourced from a local Delta Junction supplier. In summer, animals rotate across brome grass fields and a 12-way cover crop that includes clover, buckwheat, collards, sorghum, millet, barley, oats, forage pea, and sunflower. The swine herd includes Tamworth, Berkshire, Yorkshire, and Old Spots breeds selected for flavor and herd health. Dairy cows are Brown Swiss and Guernsey. All animals are born, raised, and finished on the ranch.
