Monroe Family Farms, LLC is a four-generation family farm that has been growing produce in Kersey, Colorado since 1936. The farm launched one of only three CSA programs in Colorado in 1993 and has grown the model ever since. Kyle J. Monroe, the fourth generation, took over the farming operation in 2018. Members can choose from Summer shares (mid-June through mid-October), Fall/Winter shares, or Working Shares, receiving seasonal vegetables weekly at distribution centers hosted by members across the Front Range. The farm also sells at farmers markets and supplies select restaurant partners. CSA add-ons, available to Summer share members, include local honey, Greek extra virgin olive oil, Western Slope tree fruit, farm-raised beef, lamb, and Berkshire pork, seasonal flower bouquets, and pasture-raised egg shares. Monroe Family Farms, LLC follows National Organic Program (NOP) standards and uses chemical-free methods developed over nearly a century of farming. Weeds are removed by hand or tractor, and pests and disease are managed through crop rotation. Manure, compost, and worms fertilize the soil. The farm diversifies cover cropping and uses regenerative and no-till practices where possible, focusing on soil health and biodiversity. The team works with soil scientists, farmers, and universities to refine its methods. Alfalfa is grown on-site and rotated with vegetables on a five-year cycle. Berkshire hogs are raised outdoors on pasture, with feed grown on the farm as much as possible, and are hormone and antibiotic free. Beef steers get alfalfa hay, farm produce, and a small amount of finishing grain, and are also hormone and antibiotic free. Lamb is likewise raised free-range and processed hormone and antibiotic free.
