Overview
Apiary selling local honey, live bees, and queens, plus beekeeping classes and hive sponsorships.
City Bee Savers is an apiary focused on finding, saving, and breeding honey bees. It sells local honey in sizes ranging from half-pound jars to bulk five-gallon buckets, as well as cut comb, propolis, and beeswax. The business also sells live bees: nucleus colonies (NUCs), packaged bees, and mated queens. For those looking to learn the craft, City Bee Savers offers beekeeping courses combining online sessions with hands-on workshops. Its Bee Buddy program lets sponsors support a managed hive and receive honey at season's end. The business also provides bee and wasp removal services.
City Bee Savers is actively developing what it calls the Illinois Hearty Honey Bee, a locally adapted queen and colony bred to be more resilient to the environmental stresses that threaten hives across the state. Bee Buddy sponsors receive honey described as coming from local sources, and hive updates are shared with sponsors through photos and videos throughout the season. Beekeeping courses combine online instruction with in-person, hands-on workshops at the bee yard.
