Indigenous-owned apiary offering raw honey, bees, and hands-on beekeeping education.
Capital Bees is an Indigenous-owned apiary based in Ottawa's Greenbelt, keeping 35 to 50 beehives at the Just Food Community Farm in Blackburn Hamlet. The operation produces raw, unpasteurized wildflower honey, sold in jars and bulk pails, and available at several Ottawa retailers as well as through direct pickup and local delivery. Capital Bees also sells mated queen bees and nucleus colonies (nucs) for beekeepers looking to start or expand their hives. Beyond honey and bees, Capital Bees offers a comprehensive, full-season hands-on beekeeping program, along with private tours, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring. All on-site classes take place at the Just Food Community Farm.
Capital Bees holds Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) apiary certification, a status it has maintained since April 2018, meaning its honey is produced without antibiotics or synthetic pesticides. Honey is not pasteurized and crystallizes naturally. The apiary practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and harvests conservatively, leaving hives sufficient stores for winter without supplemental artificial feeding. Capital Bees participates in the Ontario Resistant Honey Bee Selection Program, which it joined in 2017, and conducts annual third-party hygienic testing through the Ontario Beekeepers' Association Tech Transfer Program. The breeding program selects for Low Varroa Growth Rates, disease resistance, gentle temperament, and adaptation to the local climate. The bees forage on wildflowers and flowering trees within the Ottawa Greenbelt.
