Penokean Hills Farms, established in 2005, was founded by a group of Algoma-area farmers aiming to revive a declining agricultural industry in the region. The farm produces a premium Angus beef brand, raised all-naturally across multiple area farms in Algoma and sold directly to retail consumers, restaurants, and butcher shops. It operates its own abattoir and takes a farm-to-table approach that connects customers transparently to the source of their meat. The name comes from the geology of the area: the Penokean Hills are the rolling Canadian Shield terrain above the northern shores of Lake Huron where the farm sits. Penokean Hills Farms raises its Angus cattle all-naturally, with no added hormones. Antibiotics are not used as a routine practice; in cases where an animal requires treatment for a condition, those animals are marketed separately. Cattle are raised on pasture and free to roam before being moved to a finishing farm later in their life cycle. The farm uses a custom field-pea-based finishing diet, developed specifically for its herd. Field peas, which grow naturally in Northern Ontario, provide a higher concentration of natural proteins compared to a corn-based diet and contribute to an earthier flavour profile in the beef. The breeding program applies genetic research, ultrasound technology, and ancestral records to select for traits including intramuscular marbling, cutability, growth rate, finishing ability, temperament, and calving ease.
