Overview
Certified organic Berkshire pork, beef, bison, poultry, and produce from a pasture-based farm in the Peace region.
First Nature Farms is a certified organic, pasture-based operation run by Jerry Kitt, with his son Donovan and daughter-in-law Lisa operating The Homestead Farm alongside it. Together they produce Berkshire pork, beef, bison, chickens, turkeys, vegetables (including carrots, potatoes, lettuce, kale, and garlic), shoots, and honey. The farm's flagship product is its Berkshire pork, a heritage breed raised entirely outdoors with freedom to farrow naturally and roam on pasture. The operation spans over 3,000 acres of aspen forest, creeks, and beaver ponds, bordered by Nature Conservancy and Crown land. Berkshire pigs spend their entire lives on pasture and are fed certified organic grain (wheat, peas, barley, and oats), organic flax, and vitamins and minerals; all feed purchased is certified organic, with local sourcing prioritized. Sows farrow outdoors without stalls, building their own nests from straw. The farm actively reseeds and rotates pastures using pig tillage as part of a fifteen-year soil fertility cycle. Pigs are supplemented with hay when pasture is depleted, and given organic milk as a treat. The farm is powered in part by solar panels installed to reduce reliance on coal-generated electricity. Thousands of conifers have been planted over the years to restore riparian areas, and livestock are fenced away from creek banks to protect waterways. The farm operates with a stated guiding principle of protecting and enhancing natural biodiversity, and predator wildlife is managed without lethal control.
